Electric Nappyland

Wow.  Almost two years since I posted this.  Back then I made it because I was feeling hopeful and wanted to mess around and gunk up some footage.  Today I look at this and see a waypoint of sorts; a beacon to guide me on my journey during the Year of The Chris.

I’m as fearful as I’ve ever been.  What I realized then is that I’m always going to be living with fear.  What I forgot between then and now is that fear either conquers you or you conquer it.  There is no middle ground.

I don’t remember thinking "hang on to this, you’re going to need it some day".  But I’m glad I did, cause I do.

Five days and counting until the start of the YOTC.

Its been a while since I’ve posted.  When I started Electric Nappyland, I meant it to be a place where I could express myself, no pressure, no pretense (okay, not a whole lot of pretense).  Just let my inner hack out and let the cards fall where they would.

Somehow, I altered course.  Started worrying about what I put up here, and allowed that to influence what I worked on off-line.  That’s not working out so well for me.  I also realized that it makes my space look like crap.  I’ve ventured to a couple of sites that I really enjoyed only to find that they’re no longer active; the content is up, but there haven’t been any updates.  That frustrates me and I imagine it frustrates the folks (the few of you that there are) that visit my site.  So, I’m going to stop doing it.  I’m going to be more prolific with my posts for the rest of the year and into the next.  More video, more content.

It occurs to me as I post this that a lot of the stuff I’m going to be posting here are going to have something to do with the campaign.  I suppose its fitting considering it occupied some 21 months of my life.  I’m not used to doing a lot of themed posts. 

This is from a shot I got of Barack during the first week of the campaign.  He was doing a meet and greet along a downtown thouroughfare in Concord, NH.  Don’t know who the woman is, I think she just came up to shake his hand.  But I thought it felt like a Presidential moment.  The trenchcoats, the security detail, the relaxed, yet urgent energy to his egress.  (Incidentally, that isn’t Secret Service)

That was a fun day.

Before I took Electric Nappyland down for the campaign, I posted a bunch of my experiments in gunk on the site.  I’ve got a very sweet tooth for video that looks different than it did when it was first shot. 

I enjoy gunked up video in part because I think it looks cool.  I look cool.  But it also allows me to express myself, my view of the world and share it as best I can with the rest of the world.  And it allows me to do it in a way that I can’t achieve through poetry or the written word.

Of course it doesn’t always mean something; quite often I like gunking things up for no other reason than I think it would look interesting.–more interesting than it might have otherwise.

I actually think the original version is more entertaining, but the gunked up version is interesting.  And thats what I hope to be more than anything else.  I want to be interesting to myself.

And so this site is my step towards realizing that.  What you see on here won’t always suit your tastes.  Follow if you like, ignore if you want.  Let me know what you think if you care.   I haven’t shared my thoughts or my all that freely historically so I’ll be interested to see what you think.

The original footage was shot during Senator Obama’s visit to the Brown A.M.E. church in 2007 just before over the Edmund St. Pettis Bridge with Hillary and Bill Clinton, reverend Al Shaprton and a crowd of thousands to commemorate the 42 anniversary of the Selma voting rights march.
